Hybrid
Tea Roses
In this group are the bush roses with large double
blooms, heavily petalled and forming a conical
centre. They usually have three to seven flowers
on a stem.
Floribunda
Roses
In this group are the bush roses which produce
many blooms in clusters on each stem. They make
very colourful bedding displays and some of the
more heavily petalled are good for cutting. They
flower almost continually from June until late
September and often much later if there are no
severe frosts.
Patio
& Miniature Roses
These grow to a height of 6-24 inches. Use them
as edging plants, in front of other plants or
in a narrow border on their own. They look well
planted in groups 3-5 of each variety. They are
not house plants and are as hardy as larger roses.
Shrub Roses
These roses are best grown as a species or used
as hedging - some make impenetrable barriers.
Most are fragrant, disease resistant and need
little attention. They are a mixture of wild species,
old garden roses from all over the world, plus
hybrids developed over the last 100 years or so.
Shrub
Rose Varieties
Individual Shrub rose varieties include:
Alba, Bourbons,
Centifolias,
Damasks,
Gallacas,
Hybrid
Musks, Hybrid
Perpetuals, Modern
Shrub Roses, New
English Roses, Rugosas
and Spieces.
Ground
Cover Roses
These roses are suitable for filling areas where
low cover is needed. They can be trained on rockeries,
cover unsightly objects or add interest to an
old tree stump. They can be most effective as
Patio roses giving a trailing effect when planted
in tubs or pots.
Climbers
& Ramblers
Climbing roses are extremely versatile and good
value for money. They can climb into trees, over
unsightly buildings, along fences or against walls,
pillars or pergolas. Generally, climbers have
large flowers and bloom repeatedly throughout
summer and autumn.
